Spring Forward: Planning to Buy Your First Home in New Zealand?

Spring always reminds us of new beginnings.

After winter, everything starts to feel lighter. Flowers bloom, days feel brighter, and there is a sense that something new is growing. For many Filipino families in New Zealand, buying a first home can feel like that too.

It is not just about buying a house. It is about planting roots. It is about saying, “We are building our life here.”

Recently, one kababayan in our community asked a very relatable question: “Planning to buy our first home next year. Do we need to get approved by the bank first, or should we start looking first?”

That question matters because many first-home buyers feel excited but confused. Some start attending open homes before understanding their numbers. Others fall in love with a house before knowing how much they can afford.

The first step is usually not looking at houses. The first step is preparation.

Before buying, check your deposit, KiwiSaver, income, debts, spending habits, and possible borrowing power. Speak to the right people early. A mortgage adviser or bank can help you understand what may be realistic for your situation.

Also remember that even if you are approved, the bank still needs to be comfortable with the property you choose. Some houses may have issues that affect lending.

Buying your first home should be exciting, but it should also be wise.

Do not rush because others are buying. Do not compare your timeline. Learn the process, prepare your documents, and understand your numbers.
