The First Time I Saw Snow in New Zealand

Hello kabayan!

I still remember the first time I saw snow here in New Zealand — it was truly amazing.
Back then, I just visited with friends to see the snow-covered mountains, and I was amazed by all the people skiing and snowboarding. I thought, “I want to try that too!”

So the next time we went, we signed up for lessons and hired equipment.
What an incredible experience that was! I’ll never forget the feeling of gliding on snow for the first time, the fresh mountain air, and the laughter with friends.
Moments like those make me feel so blessed and happy to live in New Zealand.

My First Snowboarding Experience — A Story I Can Laugh About Now

The very first time I really tried snowboarding, I was so scared!
I was too overconfident and decided to take the cable car to the top all by myself.

Then suddenly, fog rolled in and I couldn’t see anything at all. I was terrified.
I asked one of the skiers if it was safe to go down, but I kept falling many times.

He kindly asked a staff member to turn the cable car back on so I could safely ride back down instead of risking it.
It was a little embarrassing, but honestly, I’m glad to be safe to share the story now!

That moment taught me a lot — about humility, courage, and that it’s okay to ask for help.
And from that day, I fell more in love with winter adventures here in New Zealand.

Why New Zealand is the Perfect Place for Your Winter Adventure

New Zealand offers so many amazing experiences that I never had back home in the Philippines.
This country really is one of the best places to live, work, and play — and that’s why it ranks in the top 10 countries in the world for quality of life.

If you’re living here but haven’t enjoyed what this beautiful land has to offer yet, the choice is yours.
Don’t miss out on making memories like these!

Explore the Ski Fields of New Zealand

Whether you’re on the North Island or the South Island, New Zealand has ski fields for every level of adventurer:

North Island:

  • Mount Ruapehu — The biggest ski area in the North Island, perfect for beginners and experts alike.
  • Whakapapa — Offers stunning views and great lessons for those new to snow sports.

South Island:

  • Coronet Peak (Queenstown) — One of the most popular ski fields with night skiing and lively après-ski.
  • The Remarkables (Queenstown) — Known for beginner-friendly slopes and great snowboarding terrain.
  • Treble Cone (Wanaka) — For the more experienced skier seeking challenging runs.
  • Cardrona Alpine Resort — Family-friendly, with terrain parks and lessons for all ages.

I’ve been lucky to visit many of these, and each one offers something special — whether it’s breathtaking scenery, friendly locals, or fun activities.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Winter Adventure

  • Take lessons if you’re new — It’s worth it to learn the basics and stay safe.
  • Dress in layers — Winters can be chilly, but layering helps you stay warm without overheating.
  • Wear proper gear — Boots, gloves, and helmets make a huge difference.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks — Skiing and snowboarding can be exhausting!
  • Follow safety signs and ski within your limits — No need to rush; enjoy the experience.
  • Rent your equipment from reliable shops — Don’t skimp on quality for your safety and comfort.
  • Book accommodation early during peak season — Queenstown and Wanaka get busy in winter.

Winter in New Zealand is a magical season full of adventure, beauty, and unforgettable moments.
If you haven’t tried snow sports or explored the ski fields yet, I encourage you to give it a go.
It’s one of the many reasons I feel grateful to call New Zealand home — a place where we can truly live life to the fullest.

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy every moment, kabayan!
