I wanted to share a bit of our journey in the hopes that it inspires and perhaps helps you in your own property ventures.
Back in 2015, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build our first home. We had purchased a piece of land for a $5,000 deposit and, after much excitement, had our plans ready and pre-approved by the bank. But life threw us a curveball. While we were traveling in Europe, I know, I thought we had it all, the rules changed, and upon returning, we were no longer allowed to proceed with our build.
It was a challenging time—especially since we had already paid the down payment, created our plans, and were juggling both rent and the mortgage for the land. But we refused to give up. I started thinking outside the box, exploring alternative mortgage lenders, talking to banks, and even considering co-ownership with friends to use the property as an investment. Then one day, we found a lender who believed in us. Even though our business was not yet two years old, they trusted that we would find a way to succeed, whether in business or employment. That single “yes” changed everything for us.
This experience taught us an important lesson: never stop trying. Even when faced with multiple “no’s,” it only takes one “yes” to move forward.
Although we were told that your first home doesn’t need to be your dream home, we were already set on making our dream a reality. This home certainly jump started our property ladder journey. In fact, we were able to sell it later and make $200,000 in profit, which allowed us to upgrade into a farm property.
Now, we look back on this journey with gratitude and pride. Building with our developer was one of the best decisions we made, and we’re so thankful for their support throughout the process. If you’re considering building your first , upgrade or an investment property, we highly recommend them.
