Spring has arrived in New Zealand.
The days begin to stretch a little longer. Flowers return. The landscape starts changing again.
Officially, spring in Aotearoa runs from September through November.
But for many Filipinos living here, perhaps spring can mean something more.
A chance to ask: What season of life am I in now?
When we first arrive in New Zealand, many of us are focused on one thing:
Survive.
Find work.
Pay the rent.
Understand the system.
Adjust to the weather.
Figure out Kiwi culture.
Send something home.
Build a new circle of friends.
Learn how everything works.
There is nothing wrong with survival.
Sometimes surviving is already an enormous achievement.
But eventually, another question appears:
What comes next?
From Surviving to Settling
After some time, New Zealand starts becoming less unfamiliar.
You know your way around.
You understand your workplace better.
The kids may be settling into school.
You have people you can call.
Maybe you finally understand why everyone talks about the weather so much. 😄
Life isn’t necessarily easy.
But it starts feeling more like your life.
This is the settling season.
And belonging matters. New Zealand’s official Migrant Settlement and Integration Strategy describes successful settlement as more than simply living here. Its vision includes migrants and their families thriving, having a sense of belonging, and being able to participate and contribute socially, economically, culturally and civically.
That is worth thinking about.
Because migration isn’t finished when the plane lands.
Then Comes Prosper
Prospering does not simply mean earning more money.
It might mean finally having breathing room.
Building savings.
Growing your career.
Starting a business.
Preparing for your first home.
Understanding KiwiSaver.
Getting out of unnecessary debt.
Investing in yourself.
Giving your children opportunities you once only imagined.
Or simply reaching the point where one unexpected bill doesn’t destroy the entire month’s budget.
Prosperity looks different for every family.
But there is one thing we have learned from listening to Filipinos across New Zealand:
Good decisions become easier when you have good information and the right people around you.
That is one reason community matters.
You shouldn’t have to figure out every part of life in New Zealand alone.
Immigration New Zealand itself provides settlement information and supports services designed to help migrants understand life and work here, including workplace differences, workers’ rights and local settlement support.
Ask questions.
Find trustworthy sources.
Talk to qualified professionals when the decision requires professional advice.
And learn from kabayans who have already walked the road.
And Then: Contribute
This may be the most interesting season of all.
At some point, the question changes from:
“What can New Zealand give me?”
to:
“What can I give back?”
Maybe you mentor someone newly arrived.
Maybe you employ another Filipino.
Maybe you volunteer.
Maybe you build a business that solves a real problem.
Maybe you become the person who explains the system to the next family.
Maybe you share what you learned about careers, money, parenting, property, immigration or simply surviving your first New Zealand winter.
Contribution doesn’t require fame.
Sometimes it is one conversation.
One introduction.
One meal.
One job opportunity.
One piece of advice that saves somebody from making the mistake you made five years ago.
That is community.
So, Kabayan—Where Are You Now?
Take a minute.
Not where do you wish you were.
Where are you actually?
SURVIVE
You’re still finding your footing. Your priority is stability.
SETTLE
You’re building routines, relationships and confidence.
PROSPER
You’re ready to make more intentional decisions about career, money, family and your future.
CONTRIBUTE
You’re established enough to help create opportunities for others.
And here’s something important:
You don’t have to rush through the seasons.
Life isn’t a straight line.
Sometimes we prosper and then something happens—a redundancy, illness, relationship change or financial setback—and suddenly we feel like we’re surviving again.
That’s life.
The point isn’t to impress anyone with how far you’ve come.
The point is to know where you are so you can decide what comes next.
Your Spring Forward Challenge
This September, don’t create twenty new goals.
Choose one next step.
Ask yourself:
What is one decision I can make this month that will make life better six months from now?
Maybe it’s finally creating a household budget.
Maybe it’s updating your CV.
Maybe it’s asking about professional registration.
Maybe it’s understanding your KiwiSaver.
Maybe it’s having the first conversation about buying a home.
Maybe it’s reconnecting with your family.
Maybe it’s starting the business you’ve been talking about.
Or maybe you’ve reached the stage where your next step isn’t about you at all.
Maybe it’s helping another kabayan move forward.
Whatever your answer is:
Start there.
Spring doesn’t transform the landscape overnight.
Growth begins quietly.
One new shoot.
One longer day.
One season changing into another.
Maybe our lives aren’t so different.
Spring forward, Kabayan.
Your next season doesn’t need to begin with a giant leap.
It can begin with one better decision today.
